Les Karellis en hiver

Traffic info

Karellis tip : in winter, we remind you that all vehicles driving in mountain areas are required by French law to be equipped with winter tires, snow chains or snow socks.

Traffic and road conditions

Les équipements hivernaux

Since 1 November 2021, snow chains or winter tyres have been mandatory in mountainous areas.

Therefore, to come to Val Thorens, light vehicles, utility vehicles and motorhomes must either:
either have removable anti-skid devices that can be fitted to at least two drive wheels (metal snow chains, hybrid chains, textile chains, snow socks)
or be equipped with four tyres suitable for winter driving (winter tyres)

Please note: since 1 November 2024, tyres bearing only the M+S (Mud + Snow) marking are no longer accepted. Only 3PMSF tyres are accepted as equivalent to chains (3PMSF is the acronym for “Three peak mountain snow flake”). . The purchase and use of other “snow tyres” is still possible, but in this case, users must also have chains. The 3PMSF marking is the only guarantee of winter performance in all conditions, as it is based on a standardised European tyre traction performance test.

All-season tyres with the 3PMSF marking are therefore accepted.
